FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 22, 2009) – In light of the current economic crisis, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s fourth Economic Summit and Annual Meeting will focus on the economy of the Commonwealth and what must be done to strengthen it. The summit will also continue the focus of the Kentucky Chamber’s 5 Goals to Transform Kentucky: improving education attainment; modernizing Kentucky’s government; creating a healthier Kentucky; improving Kentucky’s standing in the global market; and making the state a national leader in energy.The Economic Summit and Annual Meeting, presented by Greenebaum Doll & McDonald, will be held at the Louisville Marriott Downtown, July 14-15. The two-day event will include high-level discussions on key issues, a Taste of Kentucky reception highlighting uniquely Kentucky food and drink, a reception and annual dinner with Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist George Will serving as keynote.
Three keynote sessions will highlight the Economic Summit. Nat Irvin, II, D.M.A., professor of management, College of Business, at the University of Louisville and founder and president of Future Focus 2020, will provide the opening keynote session at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14. During his session, attendees will take part in an interactive multimedia presentation which takes a provocative look at the world of 2025 and beyond. The presentation will explore how some of the intriguing social, political, economic, technological and environmental trends of today may impact our world of tomorrow.
Michael Morris, chairman, president and CEO of American Electric Power, will provide the opening keynote session at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15. His presentation will explore global warming and how to address the issue without dramatic impacts on the Kentucky and U.S. economies.
At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Robert Compton, executive producer of the documentary Two Million Minutes, will provide the luncheon keynote on education. Two Million Minutes, a reference to the amount of minutes students are in high school, follows seniors from India, China and the U.S. The film compares the high school experiences in each country and how students allocate their time inside and outside of school.
