KSP Conducting Traffic Safety Checkpoints

Madisonville, KY – The Kentucky State Police report that during the month of November, the troopers of Post 2 will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints in their seven county area.  At these checkpoints, troopers will be checking for impaired drivers and to ensure that adults and children are properly restrained in their vehicles. For the month of October 2009, Post 2 reports 31 impaired drivers were arrested and 1,279 citations were issued.  Among the citations, 507 were for speeding, 116 for seatbelt citations and 16 child restraint citations were issued.  Post 2 Troopers also investigated 119 traffic accidents.

During the month of October, there was 1 fatal crash that occurred in Muhlenberg County.  Investigators say the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

During the year, thirty people have been killed in 28 traffic crashes in the seven county area.  Nine of the victims were not wearing seat belts, four were not wearing a helmet and five were pedestrians. Alcohol was suspected in seven of the accidents.

During the Month of November, state police encourage citizens to contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the state police toll-free hot line at 1-800-222-5555.  Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible. 

The Kentucky State Police Post 2 serves the following counties: Hopkins, Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Muhlenberg, Todd and Webster.

For the month of October 2009, Post 2 reports the following activity:
 
 
            *Arrested 31 Impaired Drivers
            *Issued a Total of 1,279 Citations
            *Issued 507 Speeding Citations
            *Issued 116 Seat Belt Citations
            *Issued 16 Child Restraint Citations
            *Issued 519 Courtesy Notices
            *Investigated 119 Traffic Crashes
            *Assisted 174 Stranded Motorists
            *Responded to 1,116 Calls for Service
            *Opened 61 Criminal Cases
            *Made 123 Criminal Arrests
 
 
**There was one (1) fatal crash that resulted in the loss of one (1) life reported in the Post 2 District in October 2009.  The fatal crash occurred in Muhlenberg County and the victim was not wearing a seat belt.
 
Through October 31, 2009, thirty (30) people have been killed in twenty-eight (28) crashes in the Post 2 District.  Nine (9) victims were not wearing seat belts, eleven (11) victims were wearing seat belts, one (1) victim was using a booster seat, four (4) victims were not wearing a helmet and five (5) victims were pedestrians.  Seven (7) of the fatal crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol. 
  
Through October 31, 2008, thirty-two (32) people had been killed in twenty-seven (27) crashes in the Post 2 District.
 
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555.  Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

**These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
