Glema Mahr - Gone But Not Forgotten

Madisonville, KY – Glema Mahr has passed away at 92.  Glema Mahr Center Director Brad Downall announced that Mrs. Mahr passed away Monday evening.


The Fine Arts Center at the Madisonville Community College Campus was renamed the Glema Mahr Center in February of 2000 in honor and recognition of her contributions to the Center, the College and Community.

She and her husband, Dr. Merle M. Mahr were very active in the community.  Glema was a past member of Discover Downtown.  She served on the Boards of the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity of Hopkins County.  She served several years on the Board of Directors of the United Way, Board of Directors of the Hopkins County Family YMCA, Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library, Madisonville College Foundation, and the Community Improvement Foundation.  She was also Ambassador Emeritus for the Chamber of Commerce.  She was honored by the Madisonville Lions Club as Woman of the Year in 1997 and Hopkins County Farmer of the Year that same year.  In 2001, she received the Benefactor's Award from the Council for Resource Development.  Mahr was recognized in 2001 by the State and in Washington D. C. for outstanding service on behalf of the Madisonville Community College.  She also received the Loman C. Trover Health Care Award in 2005.

She and her Husband, the late Dr. Merle Mahr moved to Madisonville in 1953 when Dr. Mahr become a partner in organizing and establishing the Trover Clinic.  The Regional Medical Center dedicated the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center in 1985.
 
She was born in Seward Nebraska.  She received her Bachelors Degree at State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska.  She began teaching at the Memphis School of Commerce while Dr. Mahr completed his residency.

Barnett – Strother Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements which are currently pending.

A memorial service will be held on December 13th at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts.
