HOPKINS COUNTY, KY – A Muhlenberg Co. native has left the bulk of his estate to help the educational, civic and cultural needs of Muhlenberg and Hopkins Counties.
80 year old Felix E. Martin, Jr. passed away in November 2007. At that time he made sure that boys from Muhlenberg and Hopkins County would have the opportunity to attend the same boarding school he did – McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn. Martin Scholars can receive a full tuition, four-year scholarship, valued at $150,000. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 school year, and boys from Muhlenberg and Hopkins County are encouraged to apply.
McCallie School is an all-boys boarding and day school founded in 1905 and it offers an outstanding college preparatory program for talented students who possess strong character, diverse interests and a willingness to work at competitive standards.
There are just over 900 students from grades 6th through 12th enrolled at the school. These students rank annually among the top in the Southeast in Advanced Placement tests and in National Merit Scholarship testing. This fall, seven McCallie seniors were recognized as National Merit Semifinalists and six earned Commended Scholar recognition.
The need-based financial aid scholarship is for boarding students in 9th through 12th grades. Mr. Martin, a native of Greenville, Ky. He graduated from McCallie in 1945. He attended the University of Kentucky, where he graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Commerce.
$2.8 million dollars has been given from his trust fund to the University of Kentucky for students from Muhlenberg and Hopkins Counties. The largest portion of his estate, over $50 million, will be provided to establish the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Foundation. The foundation is to support civic, cultural and educational needs in Hopkins and Muhlenberg Co.
“McCallie is grateful for Mr. Martin’s generous gift,” said Hank Bramblet, Associate Director of Boarding Admission at McCallie. “We are very proud to be able to fulfill his vision by offering these scholarships which will allow Kentucky boys to have the chance to attend our school. We hope that many of the region’s talented boys will consider this unique opportunity.”
Several Visitors Days at McCallie will be offered for families interested in the school. The full day open house events to meet faculty and staff and tour the campus are scheduled for Nov. 6, Dec. 3 and Jan. 15.
Scholarships are also available for McCallie Sports Camp, an action-oriented two-week overnight summer camp for boys ages 9-14. The camp emphasizes participation and fun in a large number of sporting activities.
