HOPKINS COUNTY, KY - On Wednesday, December 16, 2009, Gov. Steve Beshear recognized the sacrifice of a Kentucky native airman who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.  

According to the Department of Defense, Tech. Sgt. Anthony C. Campbell Jr., 35, of Florence, KY., died December 15 of wounds suffered from the detonation of an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  Campbell was assigned to the 932nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Campbell served with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight of the Kentucky Air National Guard's 123rd Civil Engineering Squadron in Louisville, KY. from 2004 to 2007 before transferring to the Air Force Reserve in early 2008. 

He entered the active duty U.S. Air Force in 1992 immediately following graduation from Boone County High School and initially transitioned to the Air Force Reserves before joining the Kentucky Air National Guard in 2004. Prior to deployment to Afghanistan in October 2009, he served as a police officer with the Cincinnati, OH. Police Department.

The governor will order that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of Sgt. Campbell's interment for which arrangements are still pending.
