Christmas at Munn’s a Successful Event

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY – For 16-years in a row the Pennyroyal Herb Club has sponsored and hosted the annual Christmas at Munn’s celebration. iSurf News was present this season as the PHC welcomed guests into the historic Munn’s schoolhouse, leading them throughout a variety of excellent holiday crafts and historical artifacts.

The event itself was a holiday craft show as well as an open house for local citizens to come and view the ancient relics from Hopkins County’s oldest remaining schoolhouse. Everyone seemed to marvel at the old paintings, ancient grade cards, and pictures from decades ago.

Many of the artifacts were the result of a small grant given by the Kentucky Historical Society. Funds were used to locate, obtain, and post items from the history of the old Munn’s School. Judging by the wide variety of photographs and memorabilia from days past covering walls, the funds were wisely invested.

The Munn’s School building was originally started in the early 1800’s as a one room building. In 1927 a second room was built to accommodate a growing amount of students in the area. The school was used for 4-H clubs, Boy Scout meetings, social events, preaching and singing services, reunions, and many other community events all the way up until 1955.

From 1955 to 1982 the school was largely ignored, slowly deterioting over the years. In 82, however, the now defunct group called The Pennyrile Arts and Crafts Guild matched funds with a state grant and, for the most part, restored it to the original condition.

iSurf News would like to join the public with a thankful heart for the Pennyroyal Herb Clubs’ hard work and ongoing dedication to local artisans and the history of our town.
